YOUNG LOCAL FILMMAKER AIMS TO CARVE OUT A PLACE IN THE INDUSTRY WITH SHORT FILM, “LOVE ME TENDER”JANUARY 3, 2010 - Love Me Tender, a short film directed by Matthew Morgenthaler, has celebrated another successful public premiere. Playing for the first time in the San Francisco Bay Area on January 2, Love Me Tender is a dark comedy about a seemingly innocent college-aged girl looking for true love. But whenever a potential boy disappoints her- she kills him. While an entertaining, funny, and scary thrill ride, Love Me Tender challenges cinema‘s classical cliches of pure and true love and examines the complexities of love in the modern era. Love Me Tender is a thesis film created by students from New York University‘s world-renowned film program. Only recently completed in November 2009, the film has enjoyed a previous successful public premiere in New York and will continue to enjoy screenings throughout 2010 at film festivals across the globe. Making Love Me Tender was an exceptional challenge in light of a classmate‘s death of a student shoot earlier in 2009. Production on Love Me Tender was almost shut down days before filming, but in the end the production became the very first to continue under NYU‘s newly adopted policy, being the first to pass its newly adopted rigorous safety review. A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, this is the second short film helmed by director Matthew Morgenthaler. Mr. Morgenthaler‘s previous short film titled, Love Lessons for Miles, has enjoyed an extensive film festival run over the last year, playing in festivals across the nation and even adopted as a teaching tool by young teen programs. Later in January, Mr. Morgenthaler will be traveling to the Sundance Film Festival to promote Love Me Tender and meet with figures in the film industry. Love Me Tender will serve as his calling card as he looks for work as a professional filmmaker in an increasingly relentless job market. Also of note, the film was almost entirely financed by contributions made by many members of the Bay Area community. Many of the film‘s future screenings will take place in the San Francisco Bay Area. It is in consideration for several local Bay Area film festivals.
